Class Vocabulary
Below is common vocabulary that we will use throughout the school year.
Absolute Location: Identifies a precise position on Earth's surface. It is often stated using longitude and latitude coordinates.
Archaic: Archaic means “Old”
Artifacts: Items such as pottery shards (pieces), weapons, tools, and jewelry that were made by humans; could also include fossils.
Atlatl: A stick used by early American Indians/Paleo Native Americans to propel a spear or dart when hunting for food.
Culture: The beliefs, traditions, music, art, and social institutions of a group of people who share common experiences.
Equator: An imaginary line that goes around the globe exactly halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole. It is 0 degree latitude.
Hemisphere: one-half of a sphere. There are four hemispheres, east, west, north, and south.
Horticulture: The science of cultivating plants and trees; keeping the seeds plants, such as fruit and vegetable plants, to grow in the future.
Paleo: Paleo means “Very Old”
Latitude: A measure of distance north or south of the equator. It is expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
Longitude: A measure of the distance east or west of the prime meridian; expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
Prime Meridian: A imaginary line running from the North Pole through England and part of Africa to the South Pole. It is 0 degrees longitude.
Relative Location: Describes where a place is located in comparison to other places.
Tribe: A group of people that share a common ancestry (family line), name, and way of living.
